Come explore strategies to effectively collaborate with students, advisors, and administration to cover daily news in your school community and develop journalism students with highly marketable skills. The Lancer Spirit is both an online and print new magazine produced by students at LHS. Londonderry HS principal, Jason Parent and school news magazine advisor, Mary DeWinkeleer share how they are engaging students in covering school community events in ways that are meaningful to them, respectful, insightful, and authentic. Discuss the challenges of the Hazelwood rule and how working together they have avoided the potential for harsh restrictions that other school newspaper advisors might feel. Learn how the principal has empowered students to, "Do it right. Do it well. Be truthful. Get all the facts. Do all the difficult interviews. Be honorable, credible journalists." A quote from one student journalist, Morgan Torre, provides insight into the success of this program, "Mr. Parent has not only presented his own views and facts during interviews, but he has also brought in the other side. He cares more about the school than his own agenda." (Presenter(s): Jason Parent, Principal, Londonderry High School, and Mary DeWinkeleer, Londonderry High School)
